- On the first day the game was marred when the crowd rebelled
against the Australian batsmen for slow scoring. The crowd of
10,000 which had grown restless in the morning, finally
boiled over in the afternoon, particularly at the batting of
Darling. Ironic cheering when a run was scored, was followed
at one point by the crowd whistling "Dead March in Saul".
Other musical compositions followed including "Poor Old Joe"
and "We won't go home till morning", interspersed with
remarks of a personal nature. Darling attributed his slowness
to a painfully bruised heel. Darling's innings lasted for 270
minutes and he hit 18 fours. Iredale batted for 195 minutes
    and included 17 fours.
