- This is a famous match. Aylward's score of 167 set a record that
remained unbeaten, at least in top cricket, until 1820. Haygarth
quotes from a printed bill of the match that 'Aylward went in at
5 o'clock on Wednesday, and was not out till after 3 on Friday.'
Ironically, the announcement of this match in the Kentish Gazette
stated that 'to shorten the game' three stumps would be used.
Another strikingly modern feature, unique for this period, is
that in the Hampshire innings the name of the bowler is added when
a batsman is caught.
