Hampshire XI full substitute: Flint (?).
- Hampshire XI Captain not named
- Hampshire XI Wicket-keeper not named
- Surrey XI Captain not named
- Surrey XI Wicket-keeper not named
- Surrey XI 1st innings: bowlers' runs conceded do not balance
- Hampshire XI 1st innings: bowlers' runs conceded do not balance
- Surrey XI 2nd innings: bowlers' runs conceded do not balance
- Surrey XI 2nd innings unfinished and treated as declared
- Hampshire XI 2nd innings: bowlers' runs conceded do not balance
- Surrey appear to have given up their second innings: this has
been treated as a declaration, although the laws of the day
did not provide for such an act. Flint apparently bowled H Walker
in Surrey (2) and he has therefore been shown as a full sub for
Hampshire (in place of whom is not known), although he does
not appear to have batted in Hampshire (2). He had appeared for
Surrey in a colts match so maybe he was a local man brought into
the Hampshire side in emergency. All versions of the score have
Nyland playing for Hampshire. No player of this name is known, but
throughout the career of R Nyren it is found in reports as a
fairly common variant of his surname. Given that R Nyren was now 55,
it has been assumed to be J Nyren, who appeared in the equivalent
match in 1788. White of Andover - assumed not to be the same as
W White. Carpenter of Alresford. Altogether this is a strange
game with big names on both sides but also some notable absentees
and a large number of fringe players. A number of participants
(Carpenter, Flint, Freemantle, Smith, Talbot, Vincent, J Walker,
Winchilsea) also appeared in the colts match between these counties
in June (SB p90), in which several of them did well.
- One newspaper has T Walker playing in this match, but two others
give J Walker (who had played for Surrey earlier in 1789) and
this is accepted
