Date-stamped : 17 Jun95 - 14:23 CC: WARWICKSHIRE v HAMPSHIRE, Birmingham, 16-19 July 1988. MERRICK TAKES TEN WICKETS AS WARWICKS DOMINATE Only seventeen overs were possible on the first day, but Warwickshire had sufficient time to achieve their fifth Champion- ship victory of the season. The West Indian fast bowler, Mer- rick, a fearsome prospect on another untrustworthy Edgbaston pitch, was their matchwinner with ten wickets for 69 from 35.1 overs. Only the Smith brothers, of whom Robin was selected for England on the rest day to play in the Fourth Test against the West In- dies, played him with any confidence. On Monday, Lloyd and Moles enforced the advantage with an opening partnership of 203. Lloyd`s unbeaten 160, his best of the summer, came from 228 deliveries in a stay of 266 minutes, during which he hit seven- teen fours. By the close Merrick had decided Hampshire`s fate.
