Prichard delighted the Essex followers with his stroke- play, hitting thirteen fours in his innings of 97 runs from 168 balls. Once again Atherton was the main runmaker for Cambridge, facing 139 balls for his half- century and batting in all for four hours, while Noyes was five minutes short of three hours over his 33. Childs took five wick- ets in his last 42 deliveries after an hour long stoppage because of rain. Stephenson and East hit ten fours apeice to set up Essex`s second declaration, and Cambridge were soon in trouble against the seam bowling of Pont, Ilott and the left-arm spin of Childs, who finished with match figures of nine for 61. Only Tremellen and Heath, formerly of King Edwards School in Birming- ham, put up much resistance as Cambridge were defeated by 135 runs.
