Date-stamped : 23 Nov93 - 08:48 Pak v Ind, Shj Final, 25 Oct 91 The match itself turned out to provide an emphatic victory for Pakistan. On the day they batted, fielded and bowled better than the Indians.Man of the match Aquib Javed produced the best ever bowling analysis for a one day match, bettering Winston Davis's 7-50+ in the 1983 world cup against Australia.Includedin those 7 wickets was a hat trick which effectively decided the match. Pakistan were put into bat by Azharuddin and started hesitantly and after 12 overs had lost both openers with only 25 on the board. The crux of Pakistans imposing total, was the 171 run partnership between Zahid Fazal and Salim Malik.Malik finally looking in top form, stroked his way to an elegant 87 off 93 balls, which included one six and six fours. The young Zahid Fazal in only because of the injuries to Miandad and Rameez followed up 39 in the previous match with an excellent 98 before he was forced to retire hurt with cramp. Good to see the young batsman make som runs.Pakistan is in need of a gifetd young batsman and Zahid would be a welcome addition to the team if he continues in todays vein. 262-6 was as good a total as I would have expected Pakistan to make and in that sense the batsman had done their job.India would have to bat very well to overhaul this score and it would defin- itely require a substantial score from 2 leading batsman for them to stand a realistic chance, but with Sidhu,Shastri, Manjrekar,Tendulkar showing excellent form and Azhar due for a score anything was possible. India, infact were off to a solid start, taking 24 runs off Im- rans opening 4 oversand Sidhu in particular looked in sparkling form. But Wasim Akram pegged the Indian openers back with a very tight opening spell (6-3-8-0).However it was not until Aquib Javed came on that a wicket fell. The real drama started in Aquib's 3 rd over.Off the first ball,Shastri was dropped by wick- et keeper Moin Khan.In retrospect a very effective move by Moin!!The next three balls saw India's chances of pulling off an unlikely victory all but disappear.First shastri played across the line to be lbw. Then both Azhar and Tendulkar followed in al- most identical fashion. From 32-0 India slid to 47-4.From then on it was alwaysunlikely that they would ever be in the running again.Majrekar and Kambli tried in vain with Manjrekar lifting Akram Reza for two sixes but theuy were always behind the re- quired rate.Kambli was run out by a direct hit from Sajid Ali and Manjrekar fell to a superb catch by Younis at wide third man.Kapil and Prabhakarwere added onto Aquibs list of victims and last man Raju fell to another run outwith India still 72 runs short. Pakistans hero for the day was undoubdetdly Aquib Javed.Aquib Javed, the forgotten member of the Pakistan pace attack. He has not got the speed or control of swing that either Akram or Younis have, and he usually occupies the support bowler position. But to- day it was Aquib who stole the limelight from his more famous colleagues.
