Result: Match drawn.

The visitors gained some useful match practice in their only fix-
ture  before  the First Test as their batsmen acclimatised to the
windy but dry conditions in Karachi. Progress in  the match   was
irritatingly  slow,  but the touring captain de Silva, his deputy
Gurusinha, opener Mahanama, and wicket-keeper  Tillekeratne   all
found themselves among the runs.  From the President`s XI no Test
hopefuls seized their chance to impress the  selectors,  and  the
best  performances came from those out of the running for the na-
tional side.
