AUS: Domestic Season 1992/93 - Tasmanian Season Summary
|
Tasmania
Tasmania had a very good season finishing third in the
sheffield shield, although disapointing in the Mercantile
Mutual cup after winning their first game against Western
Australia, they did not win another. The strength of the
Tasmanian team was a more even line up, where most batsmen
made runs and Chris Matthews gained assitance from the other
bowlers.
The Tasmanian batting was lead by three home grown
products. Dene Hills with 903 runs at 50 provided consistent
opening stands, whilst not being particularly aggresive
Hills was able to stone wall whilst good partnerships were
made. Teenager Ricky Ponting had a sensational debut season
with 782 runs at 46, including centuries in both innings
against Western Australia. He is a very talented batsman who
plays straight and will play for Australia. The third
leading batsman was Danny Buckingham who after overcoming
injury and weight problems managed 500 runs at 45, generally
scored in his blazing style. Jamie Cox had a better season
that most of his recent effort as he tightned up his
defence. Nick Courtney and Rod Tucker both had modest
seasons. Shaun Young improved with the bat and his 400 runs
at 30 improved Tasmania's depth, as did Michael Farrell's at
9, after having began as a specailist batsman. Mark Atkinson
and Chris Matthews also contribued some good scores at
important times.
Although Chris Matthews with 47 wickets at 28 was
still the lynch pin of the Tasmanian bowling attack, this
year he would helped by a much improved Shaun Young with 34
wickets at 29. Matthews started the season slowly with an
average of over 35 until late in the season when he started
taking 3 and four wickets in an innings more regularly.
Shaun Young took his wickets in larger bags, but was also
more consistent than last season, in fact at one stage there
was some talk of him being a possibility for the ashes tour.
Troy Cooley played 3 games and was expensive altough his
strike rate was high. Peter McPhee helped them to a victory
over Queensland, but his form fluctuated and his 28 wickets
cam at 36. Michael Farrell only took 7 wickets and Tasmania
really lacked a spin option. The new bowler Colin Miller
from South Australia was dissapointing as was Rod Tucker's
bowling. Both lack penetration.
