The tourists approached the first of their two  remaining  first-
class matches before the Test series attempting to achieve a hap-
py mix of practice and decent contest. In this spirit  they   de-
clared  before  the  first day was out and after three Test prob-
ables, Ramiz Raja, Basit Ali and Inzimam-ul-Haq, had  spent  time
at   the  wicket.   Four  of the  eight  wickets lost went to the
wrist-spin of an 18-year-old all-rounder, Shivnarine Chanderpaul,
who  later scored an unbeaten 140.  The President`s XI offered no
positive response to the Pakistani`s challenge.  They  batted  on
long  into  the  final  day, piling up runs remorselessly but ex-
asperating the crowd.  Holder set his claim  for  Test  selection
with  a  superb 144, while Arthurton scored an easy 74.  Chander-
paul, a left-hander, started tentatively,  but then  drove   with
easy  grace,  hitting  22  fours in 265 minutes.  Jacobs, who had
