Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:29 Zimbabwe v Pakistan One-off One Day International Played in Harare on 2 March 1993. World Champions Pakistan, with the master craftsman Javed Miandad firmly steering the ship, coasted to an easy victory over Zim- babwe in a one-off one day international played at Harare Sports Club. The 35 year old former captain showed just why he is ranked among the finest batsmen in the world with an unbeaten 86 which earned him the Man of the Match award and safely guided the ship home with not much trepidation. Miandad found a useful ally in Shoaib Mohammad. The two put up a match-winning third wicket partnership of 115 in 136 minutes. Miandad, the second highest run-scorer in limited overs interna- tionals chipped away at Zimbabwe's modest total of 164. A diffi- cult man to dislodge once anchored, Miandad was still there at the end, unbeaten on 86 which came off 132 balls in 156 minutes. In the morning, Pakistan captain Wasim Akram won the toss and put Zimbabwe into bat on a slow-paced wicket which did a bity every now and again in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 5000. However, it was not the formidable pace trio who did the early damage. None the less in the sixth over, Aaquib Javed did crack Grant Flower's helmet with a bouncer and then forced Andy Flower to leave the field with a split finger. With the departure of Kevin Arnott for 17 and the half century posted, it was leg- spinner Mushtaq Ahmed who rocked Zimbabwe. The stocky 22 year old leg-spinner teased and tantalised the Zim- babwean batsmen, all of whom had trouble reading his flight and spin. The major blow came when he dismissed Grant Flower and Gavin Briant with successive deliveries. Only Grant Flower and skipper Dave Houghton lokked comfortable against the high class attack. The Zimbabwe captain made a grafting 51 off 74 balls. Zimbabwe had a faint a sniff at an upset early in Pakistani in- nings. The first blow was afflicted by the burly Eddo Brandes who dismissed opener Raja in the the first over of the innings. This was followed up by Ali Shah who had compatriot Sohail well caught by Brandes at mid wicket. However, Miandad and Mohammad safely saw Pakistan through with a handsome third wicket partnership.
