5 Mar 94 : Saturday
The finals hopes of Dandeng-Waverley, Richmond, Prahran,
Northcote and University hang in the balance as round 16 of
District cricket ends today.
An unbeaten sixth-wicket stand between Dandenong-Waverley
captain-coach Brendan McArdle (64 not out) and dashing youngster
David McLeod (93 not out) put it in a strong position at 5/290
declared against Essendon at Windy Hill. Earlier Shaun
Richardson (69) held a shaky top order together.
Richmond medium-pacer Matthew Albers sparked a dramatic collapse
that saw North Melbourne lose 5/11 at Punt Road. After
Clinton McCarthy (57) and Stuart Connell (40) put on 96 in 92
minutes to put it in a strong position at 3/152, Albers
(4/58) ripped through the middle order before North recovered to
238.
Prahran took advantage of an undermanned Northcote attack at
Westgarth St with Michael O'Keefe (116) registering his second
District century from 198 balls with 18 fours. The Two Blues
amassed the day's top score of 6/327.
Fitzroy-Doncaster's skipper John Scholes (74) averted a middle-
order collapse against Collingwood at Victoria Park. With
Fitzroy struggling at 6/132, Scholes combined with Tim Smith (74
not out) to enable his side to finish at 7/261.
Contrasting half-centuries, a very patient one from opener Shawn
Craig (54) and an attacking one from Adam Ryan (54 not out) held
together the St Kilda batting line-up against Melbourne at the
Junction' Oval. Paceman James Sutherland (4/50) and new State
off-spinner Steve McCooke (1/53) restricted the Saints to a
modest 9/206.
A middle-order collapse saw University lose the advantage of a
magnificent opening stand between Wayne Phillips (66) and Colin
McKenzie (58), who put on 139 against Geelong-at University. The
students lost 5/21 as they slumped to 6/168 but a last-wicket
stand of 54 by Dan Lowery (2l not out) and Ashley Robertson (32
not out) took them to a respectable 9/263.
Frankston-Peninsula paceman Adrian Mack sent a shudder through
the Ringwood top order late-in the day, grabbing the wickets of
skipper Brendan Ricci (0) and Brett Montgomery (0) to have it 2/1
in the chase after Frankston-Peninsula's modest 189.
Footscray opener Paul Burns (115) set up the Bulldogs' 4/300
against Carlton at the Western Oval.
Peter Webb (57) and Justin Mills (78 not out) gave Hawthorn a
winning chance against South Melbourne at Waverley. Damien
Flemming (3/33) and Mark Butcher (3/58) made scoring difficult as
the Hawks labored to 224.
