Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:53 Sri Lanka lost their last eight wickets for 50 runs to sink to a one run defeat to India in the first of three one-day internationals on Sunday. Sri Lanka, needing five runs to win from the 50th and last over were bowled out for 211 in the second ball, one short of India's 212 for eight. Paceman Manoj Prabhakar clinched the thriller for India when he yorked last man Pramodya Wickramasinghe. In a game of fluctuating fortunes, Sri Lanka slumped in the final ten overs after opener Chandika Hathurusinghe (64) and Aravinda de Silva (62) had set up a 115-run third wicket stand off 147 balls. India came back into the game when off-spinner Rajesh Chauhan took two wickets in four balls to send the home side crashing to 173 for five. De Silva and Hathurusinghe came together after leg- spinner Anil Kumble had sent back openers Roshan Mahanama and Asanka Gurusinha in successive balls. De Silva prevented Kumble from getting his hat-trick before tearing into the attack. He joined Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga in having scored 3,000 runs in one-day internationals. The dimunitive batsman crowned his achievement by hooking paceman Javagal Srinath for two consecutive sixes over the long-leg fence. With the second mighty hit, de Sila raced to his 21st half-century in one- day internationals. But Srinath exacted revenge in the 40th over by having de Silva caught at deep square-leg by Pravin Amre. The Sri Lankans, let down by poor fielding at the outset, still managed to curb India to 212 for eight. Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin steered his side to a respectable total with his 20th one-day half-century after Ranatunga won the toss and made India bat. Azharuddin was supported by veteran all-rounder Kapil Dev (27) as they set about repairing India's innings from a poor 148 for five in the 41st over. They smashed 52 runs in eight overs for the sixth wicket. Azharuddin's 53 off 57 balls included a six and two fours while Dev's innings also contained a six and two boundaries.
