Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:53 Reports from various sources-ODI#2 India - Sri Lanka From The Daily Telegraph Sri Lanka prosper as India collapse By Ayaz Memon in Colombo There could hardly have been better entertainment for the biggest crowd in Sri Lanka's cricket history. But Mohammed Azharuddin, the Indian captain, must wonder how he came to be on the losing side. The second one-day international, and the one-day series, was all but in the Indian captain's pocket. Then eight wickets fell for 44 runs, the last seven for 21 in nine overs, and Sri Lanka won by eight runs. Sri Lanka, put in to bat, made 204 for seven from their 50 overs. Given the slow-paced wicket and a sluggish outfield, this total was not meagre. However, Manoj Prabhakar (86) and Azharuddin (62) coped far better on a wicket where the ball did not come on to the bat and they added 136 in only 29.1 overs in a superb third-wicket partnership. After that there should have been only one winner - but astonishingly it was not India. Once their stand had been broken, so was India's sense of purpose. A spate of poor shots precipitated disaster for India When the need was to accrue runs in singles and twos, Praveen Amre and Vijay Yadav went for needless big hits. The final nail in India's coffin was Sachin Tendulkar's run-out, going for a second run when he needed only one to retain the strike. With so many blunders, India did not deserve to win. ======== MORE Summarized from a Press Association report: India throw it away India lost their last seven wickets for 21 runs to hand Sri Lanka a dramatic eight-run victory in the second one-day international in Colombo. Needing 205 off 50 overs, India looked to be heading for a comfortable victory after a record third-wicket stand of 136 off 115 balls between Manoj Prabhakar (86) and skipper Azha- ruddin (62). But the dismissal of Azharuddin in the 36th over at 152, followed by Prabhakar six overs later, sparked a major col- lapse as India slumped from 151 for two to 196 all out with four balls remaining. Azharuddin's 62 came from 89 balls and included two sixes off successive balls from Muttiah Muralidaran. During his innings, he became the second Indian batsman after Krish Srikkanth to pass 4,000 runs in one-day internationals. ======== MORE An AFP report Sri Lanka score sensational win over India Sri Lanka snatched a sensational eight-run win over India with four balls to spare to level the one-day international series here on Thursday. In a virtual reversal of the first one-day, won by India by one run, Sri Lanka turned the tables in the second one-day clash by bowling India out for 196 in the 50th and final over. Sri Lanka made 204 in their allotted 50 overs after Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and put the home side in during this day-night clash. From a well-placed 152 for 2, India collapsed sensationally, losing their last seven wickets for 21 runs in 45 balls to give the home side a dramatic victory before a delirious capacity crowd of 45,000 that had packed the floodlit Khettarama Stadium. From a commanding position India suddenly found themselves need- ing nine runs off the last over with only the last pair of Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath at the wickets. When part-time off-spinner and vice-captain Aravinda de Silva, who was bowling the tense 50th over, trapped Kumble leg-before off his second ball a thunderous roar from the stands filled the grounds. The third wicket stand between Prabhakar and Azharuddin bettered the 115 between Azharuddin and Dilip Vengsarkar in Bombay in the 1986-87 series. It was also India's highest partnership for any wicket against Sri Lanka in one-day internationals, beating the 134 for the second wicket between Srikkanth and Dilip Vengsarkar in New Delhi in the 1982-83 series. Prabhakar, who suffered a cramp in his right leg, returned to the pavilion seven overs later when he tried to drive left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya and was held at extra cover by Ruwan Kalpage for 86 after surviving three chances and facing 123 balls ======== MORE From a Reuter report Collapse to hand victory to Sri Lanka India began their run chase disastrously, losing Navjot Sidhu for nought to the eighth ball of the innings and the in-form Vinod Kambli for seven to be 16 for two in the sixth over. But shortly after the drinks interval Azharuddin skied a ball from Pramodaya Wickremasinghe to Asanka Gurusinha at mid-on. Prabhakar, dropped three times in his 123-ball innings off return catches to the bowler at 33, 72 and 80, lost concentration after having treatment for cramp. Shortly afterwards he was caught at extra cover. Thanks to Vicky on r.s.c. Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
