Date-stamped : 23 Dec93 - 22:52 IND RANJI 1993/94 : West Zone One-day SAIL Trophy Bombay v Baroda, GSFC Sports Complex Baroda, 5 Dec 93 (From Times of India, 6 Dec 93 - by Max D'Souza) Baroda, December 5. Baroda carved out a pulsating two-wicket victory with three balls to spare over Bombay in the SAIL trophy West Zone league encounter at the GSFC Sports Complex here today. It was a touch-and-go affair right till the end as Baroda made amends for their poor show in the Ranji league by picking up four points. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar, who notched his maiden one-day century, was mainly instrumental in Bombay setting up a challenging task for Baroda. They totalled 238 for six and that meant that Baroda faced a run-rate of 4.76. Tendulkar also took a calculated gamble that would have won him plaudits when he in- vited Ravi Shastri to bowl the 47th over in a bid to staunch the run flow. Shastri had been denied the ball all through the innings but he managed to put the brakes on when Baroda needed 18 runs from as many balls. He gave away a single, had Mukesh Narula stumped and then produced a dot ball and followed up by giving two singles and a leg-bye. The tension was palpable when he was entrusted with the last over of the innings to bowl to Rashid Patel. He gave no runs off the first and then gifted away a wide. The burly Rashid oozed confi- dence as he essayed a reverse sweep that was intercepted, but he stepped out to the next delivery and sent the ball soaring over the midwicket fence to finish the match with a six. Baroda's innings matched the Bombay pattern. A pedestrian start for 20 overs gained slight momentum and in the slog overs runs cascaded in abundance. Tendulkar dictated the trend for Bombay and Atul Bedade for Baroda Bombay were jolted when they lost three quick wickets while only 52 runs were on the board. Zubin Bharucha had replaced the indisposed Vinod Kambli in the team. Contributed by murari (venka@*me.utexas.edu)
