Date-stamped : 06 Jan94 - 18:32 NZ Shell Cup : Round 1, 27 Dec 93 Northern Districts v Central Districts, Trust Bank Pk, Hamilton. Despite missing international Shane Thomson, ND had its first Cup win in four days short of three years. It was close though... The experiment of opening the batting with Doull, and promoting Cooper to 3 failed, but Young and Pocock then put on 70 for the third wicket. Young (64) dominated the early overs, but at 127-5 the innings was in the balance. Bradburn and Bailey then rescued the innings with a partnership of 63. Bailey was most aggressive in his 35 while Bradburn played the anchor role in scoring an unbeaten 42. Northern finished with 223-7, Twose taking 3-34. Central collapsed to 43-3, before Greatbatch and Wilson put on 69 runs. After Greatbatch went for 30 Wilson did a magnificent job in eventually getting what had been a huge run rate required down to a manageable level. With just a couple of wickets in hand Wilson hit some beautiful shots at the death, but just as CD seemed to have the edge with six balls or so to go an exhausted Wilson finally departed for a heroic 91, going for one big hit too many. The last pair were un- able to do the job and Northern were home by 7 runs. De Groen's 1-27 showed his class, while Doull and Tait both took 3 wickets. Contributed by Jason (jmas@waikato.ac.nz)
