Date-stamped : 12 Jan94 - 18:31 NZ SHLCUP : Round 7, 9 Jan 94 Wellington v Canterbury, Basin Reserve, Wellington In the upset of the competition so far, Wellington scored its 2nd win in seven matches over the all powerful Caterbury line up. The upset was even more surprising because Canterbury had been cruis- ing at 94-1 in reply to Wellington's modest 197-9. Wellington struggled throughout their innings against a typically accurate Canterbury attack. Their innings was saved by veteran wicketkeeper Erv McSweeney who continued his excellent batting run with 69 from 73 balls. Ford bowled well to take 2-21 from 10. After the early loss of Hartland, Murray and Howell seemed to make the match safe for their side with a controlled partnership. Captain Michael Austin said later that he doubted Wellington could win after dropping Murray at slip. The turning point may have been when Howell called for a runner. His run out was capitalised on by rookie medium pacer Glenn Jonas who proceeded to take three wickets as Canterbury moved from 94 to 105. Only Hastings (26) provided any resistance and Canterbury fell 40 runs short. Jonas took 2-23 from 10 despite bowling into the strong wind, while Williams took 2-22 and Austen 3-31.
