Date-stamped : 23 Jan94 - 22:28 NZ Shell Trophy 18-20 Jan 94 Northern Districts v Canterbury, Trust Bank Park, Hamilton. Canterbury batted well on the first day against some erratic ND bowling. Promising opener Darren Murray dominated the first half of the innings, before he was dismissed for 95. Soon after the red and blacks were 192-5. At this point a likely future star of New Zealand cricket, Steven Fleming, teamed up with captain Lee Germon in a vital partnership which lasted the rest of the day. Northern Districts bowled better on the second day, with the left armer Stevens the star. He broke the 175 run stand, removing both Germon for 89 and Fleming for 105. Canterbury lost their last 5 wickets for 40 runs, though their total of 407 always looked dau- nting for the poorly performed Northern batting line up on a wearing pitch. Stevens finished with 5-102. Northern lost wickets steadily, and were all out for 138. Follow- ing on 269 runs behind they did better, but still lost by an innings and 15 runs, with Priest man of the match. In his first game of the season the left arm spinner took 4-32 and 4-54. Contributed by Jason (jmas@waikato.ac.nz)
