India's strong start neutral- ised by later collapse Going great guns at one stage with a score of 180 for three, India lost its last seven wickets for the addi- tion of only 41 runs, to be all out for 221 in 49.2 overs in the last league match of the CAB tournament for Hero Cup against South Africa at Mohali, near here, today. South Africa won the toss and put India in to bat on the newly laid wicket at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium with the aim of taking advantage of the dew and freshness. Its opening bowlers Alan Donald and Fanie de Villiers did get the assistance they expected. India suffered an early shock when opener Manoj Prabhakar was trapped leg before the wicket by de Villiers after he had scored just one run (off eight balls) in the team total of six. Left hander Vinod Kambli joined Ajay Jadeja, recalled to the team in place of the injured Navjot Sidhu, and runs started flowing from their bats. with Kambli's shots reaching the fence time and again, the second wicket stand was worth 50 in just 51 minutes off 79 balls. Fortune favours the brave. and Jadeja got a 'life' when Donald dropped him at the covers of McMillan with the total read- ing 80 for one and his individual score 28. But, Jadeja was run out in the 21st over, sent down by Snell. Off 62 balls, the opener from Haryana made 39 which in- cluded six fours. The second wicket partnership between Jadeja and Kambli yielded 88 runs off 124 balls. Thanks to Jayakris Source: PTI NEWS ====> MORE India convincingly defeated SA by 43 runs in the Hero Cup One-day international played at Chandigarh today. India batted first, with Vinod Kambli scoring 86 out of a total of 221 all out. SA ended up with 178/9 after 50 overs. The South African batting, with the exception of Jonty Rhodes, looked weak in the face of steady Indian bowling. Hansie Cronje, in particular, got himself out in an uncharacteristically immature way, and his dismissal was perhaps the major blow which led to the Indian victory. Jonty Rhodes (as usual) batted quickly and confidently, ending up with 56 before he was lbw to Ankola in the 40th over. Daryl Cullinan did not play. It is becoming clear that both Rhodes and Cullinan hold more responsibility in SAs batting line-up than they can be happy with. No other batsman (with the possible exception of the openers on certain occasions) looks like a match-winner. It must also be said that Cullinan is a class higher than Rhodes, although Rhodes makes up in sheer guts for what he lacks in natural ability. This result means that SA meet India again in Delhi on Wednesday in the semi-final, the winner undoubtedly going on to meet the West Indies, barring an incredible upset. Here's hoping that SA puts up a better show! Thanks to Ian Jennings on r.s.c. Contributed by Shash (sshah@*.acns.nwu.edu)
