Contributed by Shash (shshah@*acns.nwu.edu) ====> MORE west indies beat sri lanka by 7 wickets to enter final calcutta, nov 25 pti: west indies beat sri lanka by seven wick- ets in the semifinal of the cab hero cup tournament here to- day to set up a title clash with india on saturday. brief scores: sri lanka 188 for six in 50 overs west indies 190 for three in 41.5 overs. the lankan innings, which had got off to a rol- licking start with jayasuriya being particularly belligerent on ambrose, slowed down to some extent with the arrival of hashan til- lakaratne who appeared rather shaky in tackling the west indies speedsters. roshan mahanama's 94-minute tenure at the crease came to an end when he was trapped lbw by anderson cummins who bowled a tidy line and length straightaway. anderson cummins struck two vital blows removing opener roshan mahana- ma and hashan tillakaratne in quick succession to leave lanka tottering at 74 for four after being 65 for one at one stage. both the batsmen perished in almost identical fashion try- ing to play an incoming delivery on the backfoot and missing the line completely. the umpire had no hesitation in ruling them lbw. it was spinner carl hooper who inflicted the biggest blow to the lankans getting rid of their skipper, dangerman arjuna ranatun- ga, who has been woefully short of runs in the five-nation tour- nament. mahanama, who looked rather tentative early in the in- nings grew in confidence and executed a few pleasing shots on both sides of the wicket before falling prey to cummins. his knock of 31 came off 81 balls and contained two fours. ====> MORE de silva, kalpage salvage lankan innings calcutta, nov 25 (pti) - a record sixth-wicket partnership of 109 runs between arvinda de silva and ruwan kalpage helped sri lanka recover from an early setback to score a modest 188 for six in their allotted 50 overs in the second floodlit semi-final of the hero cup against west indies (rpt) west indies at the eden gardens here today. the flamboyant de silva (68) and kalpage (not out 41) per- formed the rescuing act after the lankans were reeling at 77 for five with carl hooper and anderson cummins doing the damage with two dismissals each. the lankans could have lost left handed opener sanath jayasurya in the very first over the of match but winston benja- min spilled a rather easy chance at mid off, curtley ambrose be- ing the unlucky bowler. jayasurya got another life when he was on 17 as brian lara dropped a sharp chance at first slip with the lankan total read- ing 23 but the lapse did not prove costly for the caribbe- ans as jayasurya departed in the very next over. benjamin, who was introduced in the attack in the ninth over after am- brose proved rather costly in his first spell, ev- icted jayasurya in his second over when the latter mistimed his pull, spooning a simple catch to simmons at short square leg. he scored 18 off 27 balls and hit two boundaries.
