West Indian captain Richie Richardson's delight at winning the toss and avoid batting second on a wicket that was expected to take turn as the match progressed, was short-lived. In-form openers Brian Lara and Phil Simmons failed to provide a good start, falling by the 13th over with the score at 37. Richardson and left-handed Keith Arthurton, with 41 apiece, put on 78 for the third wicket to improve the position before a succession of quick wickets set West Indies back. Kumble had Richardson caught on the long-off fence by Vinod Kambli and then bowled Arthurton. Seamer Javagal Srinath chipped in with the wickets of Carl Hooper and Roland Holder at the other end.
