Date-stamped : 21 Nov93 - 22:51 Hero Cup, CAB Jubilee WI v Zim, 21 Nov 93, Hyderabad (D/N) West Indies defeated minnows Zimbabwe by 134 runs in a day- night Hero Cup one-day international at the Lal Bahadur stadium on Sunday. Brave fielding by Zimbabwe held up the West Indies early. Zimbabwe, clinging to fading hopes of a semi-final place in the five-nation tournament, restricted West Indies to 233 for nine in their 50 overs. Zimbabwe seamers Heath Streak and David Brain masterminded a spectacular start for their team, removing Brian Lara, Phil Simmons and skipper Richie Richardson by the 12th over with the score at 38. Vice-captain Desmond Haynes and newcomer Roland Holder saved their team by adding 92 for the fourth wicket. Haynes made a timely return to form with a defiant 75 while Holder scored 50. But the fired-up Zimbabweans cut through the West Indian middle- order by grabbing three wickets for 39 runs to make it 169-6 in the 44th over. Anderson Cummins and Roger Harper scored 26 apiece as the ex- perienced West Indian tail added 64 in the final six overs. The athletic Zimbabweans ran out three West Indians in a thril- ling display that earned the applause of some 25,000 specta- tors.
