Exciting tournament
Graham Gooch arrived at Kowloon Cricket Club to find that his Eng
land team were seeded only seventh in the Hong Kong sixes tourna-
ment, which starts today. The only consolation for England's
party - Gooch, Stephenson, Fairbrother, Reeve, Emburey, DeFreitas
and Small - was that they were ranked higher than South Africa
and Hong Kong. A local jeweller has offered a cricket bat dipped
in gold and encrusted with diamonds, rubies and emeralds - worth
perhaps 70,000 pounds - to the first side to win the title three
years in succession. The tournament has attracted much stronger
all-round international sides after last year's inaugural sixes,
won by Pakistan. The equivalent of about @30,000 has been put up
in prize money, with 10,000 pounds for the winners.

Gooch's men sweep to sixes success
England players fly back to London tomorrow more than 4000 pounds
richer and carrying a solid silver miniature cricket bat each for
winning the two-day Hong Kong Sixes tournament at Kowloon, writes
Charles Randall. Heathrow customs might take some convincing that
England did win something at cricket, but that is what happened.
Graham Gooch's side swept the board at this instant action form
of the game. Phillip DeFreitas won the man of the tournament
prize - a full-size bat dipped in precious metals - and Dermot
Reeve, making a popular appearance at the Tsim Sha Tsui ground
where he once played, took the man-of-the-match award after Eng-
land beat Sri Lanka in the final. The tournament, sponsored by
Cathay Pacific and Wharf Holdings, showed that so much is
possible in Hong Kong. If a small insert in the classified ads of
the colony's main daily newspaper can offer a Van Gogh for sale
at close on @1 million, the gathering of so many world renowned
cricketers in one place becomes less remarkable. England, with
Neil Fairbrother, Gladstone Small and John Emburey completing the
side, won the final with one delivery to spare after Reeve had
sent his home crowd into ecstasy with a typically resourceful 31.

Graham Gooch led England to another international cricket success
today as they beat Sri Lanka by three wickets in the final of the
Hong Kong Sixes. Gladstone Small hit the winning run off the
penultimate ball of the match. England batted impressively to
overhaul Sri Lanka's formidable 74 for one. Dermot Reeve, who was
once a Hong Kong national player, won the man of the match award
for his 31 not out which helped his side to recover from a shaky
start. Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva hit 28 not out, his third
unbeaten innings, and captain Arjuna Ranatunga was 15 not out,
providing the SriLankans with a solid total for England to chase.
In the semi-finals England beat South Africa by 15 runs and Sri
Lanka defeated Australia by 18 runs. West Indies, India, and Hong
Kong were the other teams participating in the two-day tournament

South Africa 64 for 3 (A Kuiper 33no; D Reeve 1-5,DeFreitas 1- 4)
England won by 15 runs.
Sri Lanka 78 for 4 (S Jayasuriya 29, A de Silva 23; I Healy 2 for
18); Australia 60 for 3 (M Waugh 17, Dodemaide 16*, M Hayden 14*;
A Ranatunga 1-5, R Kalpage 1-11). Sri Lanka won by 18 runs.
Final:
Sri Lanka 74 for 1 (A de Silva 28*, Ranatunga 15*, S Jayasuriya
18); England 75 for 3 (G Gooch 27, D Reeve 31*). England won by
three wickets.
