Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:55 Day 1 South Africa off to flying start in Sri Lankan tour GALLE, Sri Lanka, Aug 13 (AFP) - Darryl Cullinan and Jimmy Cook shared in a unfinished century stand after left arm bowlers Brett Schultz and Clive Eksteen gave South Africa a superb start to their tour of Sri Lanka in this southern port city Friday. Pace bowler Schultz and spinner Eksteen took four wickets each to destroy an inexperienced Board XI team for 90 on the first day of their three-day tour opener. South Africa then moved to a command- ing 159 for three at the close. Cullinan hit an unbeaten 64 and Cook remained 42 not out in 79 balls during an unbroken 108-run fourth wicket partnership in 101 minutes that saw South Africa recover rapidly from a poor 51 for three. Schultz ran through the top-order in an inspiring second spell taking four wickets in 17 balls to send the Board side tottering to 45 for six at the lunch interval. Hemantha Wickramaratne was the only one to show any resistance, scoring a defiant 30 in 86 minutes before the left-hander pulled Eksteen, only to see Andrew Hudson taking a well-judged catch at deep mid-wicket. He had just two boundaries in his 55-ball innings. Despite the sultry weather, Andrew Hudson and Cullinan had a fine day in the field taking four and three catches respectively. From a Reuter report: Darryl Cullinan, 64 not out off 114 balls, which included one six and six fours, and Jimmy Cook, 42 not out from 79 balls, added 108 runs in 101 minutes in an unfinished stand. Their partnership followed a mini collapse as South Africa lost their first three wickets for 51 runs. The largely inexperienced home team, which included only two test players in Marvan Atapattu and Dulip Liyanage, batted weakly after choosing to bat first on a pitch tailor-made for runs. But Donald is yet to shine By Neil Manthorpe (The Daily Telegraph) South Africa comfortably wrapped up victory by an innings and 13 runs just 75 minutes into play on the third and final day of their only game against a Sri Lankan Board XI in Galle yesterday. Brett Schultz, 22, took two wickets in the first over to push the young hosts from their overnight score of 130 for six to 130 for eight, but both he and Allan Donald were treated with dis- dain by tailenders Wijetunga and Chandana, who added 47 for the ninth wicket, hooking with vigour. While Schultz had the conso- lation of seven for 56 match figures, Donald struck just once in the game and conceded 50 runs in 14 second-innings overs. The most successful of the tourists' attack was left-arm spinner Clive Eksteen whose second four-wicket tally gave him eight for 84 and an almost certain first Test slot.
