Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:55 SA v SL BOARD XI, Day 3, 19 Aug 93 Symcox and Dharmasena take the honours Newcomers Pat Symcox and Kumar Dharmasena grabbed the honours on the first day of the three-day match between South Africa and Sri Lanka's Board XI in this northwestern city Wednesday. All-rounder Symcox hit South Africa out of trouble with a power- ful 53 not out to help his side to 303 for seven at the close. Right-arm off-cutter Dharmasena playing in his maiden match against a foreign side, took four wickets in seven overs to trigger a top-order collapse that saw South Africa lose five wickets off 65 balls. They had begun with a 162-run opening stand between skipper Kepler Wessels and Andrew Hudson. Vice-captain Hansie Cronje later helped steady the innings with a 63-run seventh wicket stand with Symcox, better known for his off-spin bowling. The burly Symcox, one of two newcomers in the side, smacked three sixes, two off Dharmasena, and four 4s in his 91-ball knock. Dharmasena broke the first wicket partnership when he had Wessels caught at gully by Hashan Tillekeratne after the off- cutter had dropped a return catch from the batsman off his pre- vious ball. Wessels scored 62 with seven boundaries in his 195- minute stay. Six overs later Hudson became the second South African to miss his century on tour when he fell leg-before for 91 to left-arm spinner Sanath Jayasuriya. Darryl Cullinan made 92 in the first three-day game against another Board XI in southern Galle. Hudson faced 172 balls and his 210-minute innings included 15 boundaries. The 22-year old Dharmasena then took the wickets of Cullinan and veteran Jimmy Cook in five balls and followed it up with the scalp of Jonty Rhodes three overs later to have South Africa creaking at 181 for 5. The game ended in a draw. (Thanks AFP and Muthu) posted by Vicky on r.s.c. Contributed by The Management (help@cricinfo.com)
