line-up to dismiss the home side for a paltry first innings total
of 147 on the opening day of the third and final cricket test on
Thursday. Left-armer David Brain, playing in only his third
test, finished with five for 42, while Eddo Brandes and John

Visiting captain Andy Flower's decision to bowl first on
winning the toss paid handsome dividends when Pakistan were
dismissed in 51.4 overs just 15 minutes after tea. The Zimbabwe
bowlers made life difficult for the Pakistani batsmen with
swing and seam as the tourists sought consolation after losing
the first two tests. Inzamam-ul-Haq was top scorer with 33
while veteran Javed Miandad, playing his 124th test,
contributed 31 and Basit Ali 29 as the best of the rest. Javed
and Basit kept Zibabwe at bay for just over an hour, sharing a
fourth-wicket partnership of 53. Brain made the first
breakthrough of the day, removing Aamer Sohail for two on the
fourth ball of his first over as Alistair Campbell took a
brilliant catch at gully. Shoaib Muhammad and Inzamam added 47
runs for the second wicket but their dismissals in the
space of four balls left Pakistan reeling at 60 for three at
lunch. Zimbabwe claimed five wickets in the afternoon session
as Pakistan slipped to 140 for eight by tea. At the close,
Zimbabwe were 15 without loss in eight overs, with Gary Flower on
