CC: Review of Round 12, 28 Jun 1993 (Day 4)

County Championship: 24 - 28 June 1993
Day 4 reports 28 June 1993

LORD'S: Middlesex v Surrey
Keith Brown and John Emburey steered Middlesex to an unlikely
victory over Surrey to maintain their place at the top of the
county championship. Brown (79) and Emburey (36) blasted an un-
broken seventh wicket partnership of 99 after Surrey looked set
for victory after reducing the hosts to 120-6. The pair reached
their target of 218 to frustrate the visitors despite some lively
bowling by Waqar Younis.

STOCKTON: Durham v Worcs
Skipper Tim Curtis made a heroic 116 not out to steer Worcester-
shire to a three wicket win over Durham. He shared an unbroken
stand of 70 with Chris Tolley in the visitors' 266-7 to deny
Durham their first championship win for more than a year. Curtis
stood firm for seven and a half hours surviving a blow on the
right ear from Anderson Cummins which needed lengthy treatment
when he was on 91.

SWANSEA: Glamorgan v Notts
Unbeaten centuries by Tim Robinson and Paul Johnson steered Not-
tinghamshire to a comfortable eight wicket victory over Glamorgan
at Swansea. Skipper Robinson (139) registered his second ton of
the match from 171 balls with Johnson (112) following from 98
less deliveries in a stand of 198. It was disappointing for Tony
Cottey who hit a pre lunch 100no off 108 balls as the visitors
were set 336 to win.

ILFORD: Essex v Warwickshire
Graham Gooch and John Stephenson both hit half centuries to set
up an Essex victory against Warwickshire at Ilford. The defend-
ing champions scored 273-7 to edge home by three wickets after
Gooch (63) and Stephenson (64) took part in an opening stand of
114. But they were made to fight much harder than had seemed
likely. And victory could even had eluded them had Warwickshire
accepted their chances.

HOVE: Sussex v Cambridge Univ
Opener Garri Jones (45) led a Cambridge rearguard action which
enabled the University to salvage a draw at Hove after being set
a target of 284 to win. Earlier former England star Bill Athey
was the star of the day cracking 107 off 178 balls which included
17 fours. However the visitors were never in the hunt after
star batsman John Crawley fell for 20 giving pace bowler Danny
Law his opening first class victim.

DERBY: Derbyshire v Lancashire
On a pitch which yielded 1497 runs the home side failed by 111
to reach a target of 379 for victory due mainly to a titanic per-
formance by Wasim Akram. A dramatic spell of six wickets for 11
runs in 49 balls shattered Derbyshire's dreams after they were
well on target. That was mainly due to John Morris who produced
an array of dazzling shots in a knock of 151 before Akram made
his Oscar winning entrance.

HEADINGLEY: Yorkshire v Kent
Kent were forced to hang on for a draw after being set 322 off 75
overs to beat Yorkshire at Headingley. At 111 -5 Kent were in
some trouble but were steered towards safety by Steve Marsh and
Matthew Fleming who each batted for nearly two hours. Earlier
Yorkshire declared their second innings at 410-6 with skipper
Martyn Moxon undefeated on 171 after a marathon innings spanning
500 minutes.

LEICESTER: Leics v Gloucs
Phil Robinson and Paul Nixon hammered 54 runs off the last six
overs to give Leicestershire a dramatic victory over Gloucester-
shire at Grace Road. Leicestershire who needed 168 in 34 overs
had slipped to 114-5 when the pair joined forces to steer the
hosts home with four balls to spare. Helped by two sixes off
spinner Mark Davies Robinson hit a quickfire 29 while Nixon
chipped in with 17.
