West Indian opener Desmond Haynes was the only man to walk after a quickfire 73. Day 3 : No Report. Middlesex progress to 477-5. Day 4: England reject Phil Tufnell claimed a career best 8-29 to speed leaders Middlesex to an astonishing 10 wicket victory over closest rivals Glamorgan. Desmond Haynes ran up his second half century of the game as the visitors scored the 88 required in just 90 mins. =====> MORE The clash between the top two teams in the Championship was dom- inated by batting titans for three and a half days. Then Glamorgan`s batsmen collapsed dramatically to Tufnell, giving him career-best figures of 8-29. Their ten-wicket defeat was a most unlikely result, especially as the first two innings had produced 1,146 runs. After Morris, who became the first player to score 1,000 runs in the season, and Maynard went cheaply, Dale and Richards shared a stand of 425, a new Glamorgan record for any wicket, easily outstripping the 330 by openeers A. jones and R.C. Fredericks aganst Northants at Swansea in 1972. It was the seventh-highest fourth-wicket stand in the history of first-class cricket. Dale scored his maiden double-century, also passing 1,000 runs, and Richards his first for Glamorgan. Middlesex`s batsmen also prospered on the placid pitch, night-watchman Em- burey making his sixth hundred and putting on 262 with Gatting, and Middlesex batted on for a lead of 22 before Glamorgan began their second innings at 12.10pm on the final day. A draw looked certain. Tufnell came on in the eighth over and with his fifth ball bowled James to begin an astonishing collapse; Glamorgan slumped from 25 for one at lunch to 104 for eight at tea. Richards was caught first ball. Nine wickets fell for only 60 runs - the last five in ten overs - which left Middlesex the sim- ple task of scoring 88 from 33 overs. Haynes and Roseberry cruised to victory from 19.4 overs as Glamorgan`s spinners failed to exploit the wearing pitch which had caused such panic within their own ranks.
