Date-stamped : 07 Feb95 - 06:51 CC 1993: LANCASHIRE v GLAMORGAN, Manchester 15-19 July 1993 Glamorgan maintained their Championship challenge, easily reach- ing a contrived target of 243. However, it is the contrivance that will be remembered, and not kindly, After the fourth morn- ing, like the whole of the first day, was washed out, Glamorgan declared behind. Lancashire put in their tailenders and Maynard and Cottey bowled, or, rather, presented, 12 overs in half an hour which produced 235 runs. In that time, 19-year-old Glenn Chapple, who had never scored a fifty, hit first-class cricket`s fastest century, which took 21 minutes and 27 balls with ten fours and nine sixes. It is not recognised by Wisden because of the connivance of the bowlers and, indeed, the fielders; Richards even tried to kick the ball over the boundary. In one over from Cottey, Chapple hit 34 (664666) and the innings in total produced 31 fours, ten sixes and 20 no-balls, many deliberate. The no- balls, in particular, left the computerised scoring system strug- gling to keep up. The timing of Chapple`s century was confirmed because play was, by chance, being recorded on video. When normal cricket was resumed, Glamorgan had to bat without James, who had broken his thumb scoring his first century of the season. Howev- er, Dale took his place as opener and steered Glamorgan to within 31 of victory. Thanks: 1994 Wisden Contributed by cp (help@cricinfo.com)
