LEICS v WARWICKS: Leicester
Leicestershire captain Nigel Briers was left regretting his deci-
sion to put Warwickshire into bat at Grace Road as the visitors
piled up 284.
Briers' misery was further compounded when he was dismissed for a
duck by fast bowler Allan Donald Leicestershire finishing on 6 1.
Dominic Ostler and Keith Piper both hit half centuries for War-
wickshire and Paul Smith rapped 47.
MIDDLESEX v HANTS: Lord's
David Gower again chose a Test match day to remind the England
selectors of his form.
While England were struggling to contain Australia at Headingley
he took a superb 91 off championship leaders Middlesex at Lord's.
The 36 year old left hander dominated a second wicket stand of
139 with Sean Morris (54) as Hampshire reached 275 8 by the
close.
ESSEX v DURHAM: Chelmsford
Wayne Larkins and Phil Bainbridge provided the cornerstone of a
healthy Durham total of 364 8 against Essex.
Larkins fresh from his century against Australia in the previous
match set the scene with a swashbuckling 80 including 12 bound-
aries.
The more subdued Bainbridge took 115 minutes to complete his 50
and has so far resisted for just under four hours in making an
unbeaten 87.
LANCS v NOTTS: Old Trafford
Stand in skipper Mike Watkinson rescued Lancashire from champi-
onship disaster against Nottinghamshire at Old Trafford by hit-
ting his second ton this season.
Watkinson who stepped in for the injured Neil Fairbrother hit
102 to guide Lancashire from 132 6 to 289 9 at the close.
Warren Hegg joined his skipper for a seventh wicket stand of 85
in 31 overs until Cairns beat him for pace.
WORCS v GLAM: Worcester
Glamorgan seized control on a lively pitch at New Road thanks to
four wickets by teenager Darren Thomas.
Worcestershire's batting problems were again exposed as Thomas (4
for 84) and Steve Watkin with (3 for 35) from 26 overs bowled
them out for 267.
In his second spell the 18 year old Thomas dismissed Worcester-
shire captain Tim Curtis for 45 following an opening stand of 84
with Philip Weston (39).
SOMERSET v KENT: Taunton
Richard Harden stood firm as wickets tumbled in an amazing first
day's play between Somerset and Kent at Taunton.
Harden's unbeaten 72 steered the home side to within six runs of
the lead after 18 wickets fell during the day. Nigel Llong (56)
top scored for Kent.
Kent were skittled out for 144 on a lively pitch and Harden lift-
ed struggling Somerset to 138 8 on a lively pitch.
DERBYS v SUSSEX: Derby
Kim Barnett staged another one man rescue mission to keep Der-
byshire in the match against Sussex at Derby.
On a day dominated by the bowlers Barnett (73no) carried his bat
for the third time in his career as Derbyshire collapsed for 183
on a green pitch.
But Sussex also struggled with Simon Base claiming his third five
wicket haul of the summer. Franklyn Stephenson hit 55 not out
leaving his side 187 9.
NORTHANTS v SURREY: Northamptn
Paul Taylor snapped up three quick wickets to leave second in the
table Surrey struggling against Northants.
The left arm paceman's lively opening burst reduced Surrey to 79
4 from 36 overs as they replied to Northants' 238 all out led by
Nigel Felton (66).
Surrey slumped into deep trouble at 45 4 but David Ward (35no)
and Andy Smith (14no) batted out the final 18 overs of the day.
