The red hot Championship favourites were cock-a-hoop after dismissing Essex for just 148 as England`s returning hero Angus Fraser took 4-19 in 16 overs From contemplating a sizeable first innings lead Middlesex were bowled out for 167 as Ilott picked up 6-42 a week after being dropped by England. Day 2, 27 Aug 1993: Mike Gatting brought some sanity back to Colchester`s Castle Park as Middlesex all but clinched the Bri- tannic County Championship. The red-hot title favourites looked ready to follow a crazy script when slipping to 20-2 chasing 135 to win. But Gatting`s swashbuckling unbeaten 76 knocked Essex into submission with a seven wicket defeat inside two days leav- ing Middlesex as runaway leaders.
