Date-stamped : 20 Feb95 - 10:42 CC 1993: HAMPSHIRE v SUSSEX, Portsmouth, 26-30 August 1993 SUSSEX WON BY 57 RUNS Day 1, 26 Aug 1993: David Smith and Martin Speight hit superb centuries to put Sussex in the driving seat against Hampshire. Smith cracked a season`s best 142 not out and Speight a rapid fire 121 in a fourth wicket stand of 214 which took Sussex to a commanding 375-4. After the visitors lost two quick wickets Smith led the recovery batting in all but three of the day`s 111 overs. Alan Wells added a useful 42. Day 2, 27 Aug 1993: David Gower delivered another nudge to the England selectors with his third century of the season for Hampshire. With selection for the West Indian tour not far away Gower showed he has lost none of the desire for run scoring with a patient 113. He steered Hampshire replying to a Sussex total of 439 to within four runs of the follow on before he was out. Hampshire were 287-6 at the close. Day 3, 28 Aug 1993: Bill Athey and skipper Alan Wells hit half centuries as Sussex took a stranglehold against Hampshire. Athey made 74 including nine fours in his 162 ball innings before fal- ling lbw to left armer Kevan James and Wells made a typ- ically belligerent 57. Sussex ended the day on 272-6 a lead of 362 with David Smith still there on 23 having batted down the order be- cause of a rib injury. Day 4, 30 Aug 1993: Sussex leg spinner Ian Salisbury produced season`s best batting and bowling to send Hampshire sliding to defeat by 57 runs at Portsmouth. Hampshire needed 409 in 94 overs and were bowled out for 351 in the 84th as Salisbury claimed 5/95. He had earlier hit 63 as Sussex declared at 318/7.
