Gower helped himself to an unbeaten 95 as Hampshire reached the close of a rain-restricted day on 211 for 3 from 73 overs. Dropped by Nasser Hussain at slip when nine, Gower entertained a sparse crowd with a series of attacking shots. His innings, which he started by pulling the first ball he received from John Childs into the pavilion balcony for six, took him past 1,000 runs for the season and included eight fours and two sixes.
