Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:47 Kent v Glamorgan, Deciding Sunday League Match, 19 Sep 93 Just in case anyone thought that Kent vs. Glamorgan on Sunday was "just another Sunday League Game" let me try to put them right. They managed to cram 12,000 people into the Canterbury ground, this may not sound a lot but they had to move the boundary rope up to 30-40 feet to let them sit on the pitch. 4 to 5,000 had come from Wales and people had been queueing since 4am for admission. When Viv strolled out to bat, the entire stadium rose to its feet and gave him a standing ovation all the way to the crease. If this affected him he didn't show it, at the time. His innings was not chanceless but it would be ungracious to harp on that as there was the eruptive driving, the ball smacking into the advertising hoardings, that we know of old. When Tony Cottey struck the winning four, the crowd poured on to the pitch and Viv, capless, ran off punching the air. I can honsestly say that I have never seen Viv Richards more emotional than after that victory. I think it meant rather a lot to him. It also meant a lot to the Welsh contingent who were waving Red Dragon flags and making the fencing rattle with "Land of My Fathers". No, not just another Sunday League match. In addition to Viv and Carl Hooper, also playing was Dean Headley grandson of the great George Headley unless I'm mistaken. Thanks to Peter Harris on r.s.c.
