Date-stamped : 03 Nov93 - 05:56 The Scarborough Festival matches have shown yet again that while Zimbabwe do have the potential to become a world-class batting side, their bowling could hardly rate county standard at present. With veteran off-spinner John Traicos not playing for Zimbabwe in these matches, experienced batsmen like Jones, Arthurton and Sleep have had a field day. Only Eddo Brandes, who has occasionally during his career produced inspired performances, managed to keep things under control in the 1-day match. It should be remembered, however, that the Zimbabwe side at present is very young - eight of the 11 who played the three day match are 25 or younger, including the captain, Andy Flower. The two latest additions to the side are batsman Guy Whittal, 21, and Heath Streak, a 19 year old all-rounder. None of these eight have played as many as 10 first class matches yet, and it's obvious that it will take some time for them to adapt to the pace and the variety of the longer game. One player who should know better, however, is veteran opener Kevin Arnott. Once Arnott and Grant Flower had put on 207 for the first wicket in Zimbabwe's second innings at Scarborough, batting through to tea, the game was reasonably safe even though Zimbabwe had not yet passed the World XI score. Given the festival nature of the game, the situation demanded that Zimbabwe show some enterprise, and World XI captain Dean Jones set the scene by putting on the very friendly bowling of Jimmy Adams and Keith Arthurton. However, Arnott refused to budge, taking 308 minutes in all to grind out 111 runs. The tedium was too much for a good portion of the crowd, who left the ground long before the finish. Despite Zimbabwe's inexperience, this sort of attitude is not going to win them any friends, and if they want to be invited to play in more tournaments and gradually increase the quality of the opposition they face they're going to have to risk a few losses for the sake of positive cricket.
