Date-stamped : 17 Nov94 - 22:25 DEODHAR 1994/5 : West Zone v East Zone played at Keenan Stadium, Jamshedpur, 1 November 1994 Manjrekar and Bhave in record stand. A record opening partnership of 205 runs between skipper Sanjay Manjrekar (125) and Surendra Bhave (79) and fine bowling by leg- spinner Sairaj Bahutule helped West Zone register a crushing 130-run win over East Zone in their second Pepsi Deodhar trophy one-day tie at the Keenan stadium here today. Batting first after losing the toss West batsmen never appeared to be under pressure even after their defeat at the hands of Cen- tral in their previous Deodhar tie at Burnpur on Sunday last. Manjrekar and Bhave opened and played superb innings' to give the West a sound start. Manjrekar gave a simple catch to Subroto at mid-wicket off medium-pacer Saurav Ganguly after scoring 125 runs. He played for 173 minutes and faced 162 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and a 5. Manjrekar who had failed to score against Central, reached his hundred in 149 minutes, facing 146 balls with nine fours and a five. Bhave once again proved his worth by scoring a splendid 79 runs before he was unfortuantely run-out while trying a difficult third run. Amiya Roy fielding at deep point threw the ball and Subroto did the rest to send him back to the pavilion. Surendra played for 196 minutes, faced 129 balls and hit five boundaries. Amol Muzumdar, who joined Bhave after Manjrekar's departure was lucky to survive twice. Debutant Prasanta Mahapatra, dropped a simple catch at extra-cover off Utpal Chatterjee when Amol was on two and Prashant Vaidya missed a run-out when the batsman was on 16. Muzumdar, however, took advantage of the chances, and played a sparkling innings of 37 not out in 25 balls including five fours. Sameer Dighe, in his short stay of four minutes at the crease, faced five balls, hit one six and one four to score 13. Dighe was caught at long-off by Avinash Kumar of Prashant Vaidya. West's 100 runs came in 107 minutes and 164 balls in 25.1 overs; 150 in 139 minutes and 221 balls, 200 in 40 overs in 170 minutes. West, whose run-rate was above 5.5, scored 55 runs in the last five overs at the rate of 11 runs per over. Saurav Ganguly and Prashant Mahapatra tried to save the situation for the East by adding 40 valuable runs for the second wicket. Saurav scored 36 with five fours while facing 66 balls in 110 minutes. He fell leg-before to Bahutule. Saba Karim, though being dropped at his individual score of 12, could not take the advantage and was cuaght behind off Arothe. Karim hit a towering six and two rasping boundaries while scoring 28. Bahutule finished the East innings by claiming four for 26.
