Wills Trophy Quarter Final and Semi Final - Brief Report

Wills Trophy 1994 - Report

Quarter Finals, 2 October 1994

Bombay defeated Bengal :

Bengal _almost_ pulled off an upset victory.

Wills-XI 'defeated' Karnataka :

Only 64 overs could be bowled, before rains played spoil
sport at the KSCA stadium B'lore. Result was decided by the
spin of the coin which Kumble lost. Highlights of the
(incomplete) match were : a stylish 38 by Rahul Dravid,
some good batting(!!) display by Kumble and Srinath.
Karnataka managed to score 218/7 in 50 overs. Fraser was
impressive (10-1-36-0) but was not among wickets. Prabhakar
bowled an expensive spell (10-0-63-0). When the Wills-XI
batting opened, Haynes was tied down by some good bowling by
Prasad and Srinath. He was 21* in a score of 51/0 in 14
overs when the game was halted due to rain.

Haryana defeated Uttar-Pradesh :

Haryana : 243 for 7 in 50 overs (Jadeja 51, Puri 51, Kapil
33, Kaypee 36) Haryana won by 51 runs.

---------------------------

Semi Finals, 5 October 1994

Haryana defeated Wills-XI :

MOM Ajay Jadeja's century(104 in 140 balls), Kapil's 42 and
Rajesh Puri's 44 helped Haryana pile up 252 a.o in 49.4
overs. Prabhakar was again expensive 10-0-63-3 and Fraser
(9.4-1-41-1) couldn't do much. Kapil led the bowling attack
and with good help from other bowlers, Haryana restricted
Wills-XI to 189 a.o. Haynes scored 30 run out. (was
dropped at slip off Kapil when on 19)

Bombay "defeated" Board President's XI :

was to be the first day-night Wills trophy match played at
Hyderabad. Washed out completely... and the result was
decided by the spin of the coin, which SRT won !!. And
there were rumours that the Bombay Manager Suru Nayak had
asked Sachin to practice with the coin (for "calling it
right") the day before the semis :-). Real professional
approach, isn't it ?.

So, it's Bombay vs Haryana in the FINAL.
