Date-stamped : 22 Apr95 - 14:33 ASIA CUP 95 FINAL: Sri Lanka v India Sharjah, 14 April 1995 ====> Prematch High-scoring Asia Cup final on cards India are banking on their batting, led by Sachin Tendulkar, to carry them past a resurgent Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final here on Friday. "Conditions here are so good for batting, nothing short of 250 is safe," Indian manager Ajit Wadekar said Thursday after his team's strenuous three-hour practice session at the Sharjah cricket ground. "I am glad our batting runs deep. We need a good start from Ten- dulkar and the others must maintain the momentum right through the innings," he said. The Indians, led by Tendulkar's unbeaten 112 off 105 balls, swamped the Sri Lankans by eight wickets in their round-robin league match last Sunday. But Wadekar dismisses any psychological edge for India, looking for its fourth Asia Cup title and the third in a row. "It's going to be a new day and a new game. The Sri Lankans are strong competitors. You can't take them for granted," he said. The Sri Lankans, who brushed aside Pakistan on the way to a third successive Asia Cup final against India, see this as their best chance to take revenge. "The win over Pakistan has obviously given us added confidence," skipper Arjuna Ranatunga said. "But we need to play to our full potential to overcome a settled side like India." Neither team is expected to spring surprises in their playing elevens, which will be finalised shortly before the toss. A magnificent third wicket stand of 175 off 184 balls by Navjot Sidhu and skipper Mohammad Azharuddin saw India to an eight wick- et victory over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup final on Friday. Sidhu's 84 not out and an unbeaten 90 by Azharuddin were enough to give India their third consecutive win in the tournament and their fourth Asia Cup title. Set 231 off 49 overs for victory, India scored 233 for two to reach the target with 7.1 overs to spare. India started in a blaze with star batsman Sachin Tendul- kar and Manoj Prabhakar taking the score to 48 in just 8.4 overs. Tendulkar contributed 41 to the opening stand before he was caught by Sanath Jayasuriya off Champaka Ramanayake. His knock off 40 balls contained five fours. Prabhakar followed 10 runs later when he holed out to Rumesh Kaluvitharana off Anil Kumble for nine. Then Azharuddin and Sidhu frustrated Sri Lanka's bowlers with attractive hitting all round the wicket. "Our performance today showed we have a good depth in batting. It also showed that the team is not fully dependent on Tendulkar. We did not bowl all that well, but our batsmen made up for their mistakes," Azharuddin said. Azharuddin, named man of the match, worked the ball on both sides of the wicket and had the Sri Lankans often shuffling their field. His 90 off of 87 balls included five fours and two sixes. Sidhu's 84 came of 108 balls and included five fours. Sri Lanka had earlier built their innings around Asanka Gurusinghe who slammed a solid 85. His 120-ball innings included three sixes, one each of Ashish Kapoor, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble, and two fours. They were 89 for four after 24 overs, but Gurusinghe paced his innings and with Hashan Tillekeratne put on 61 runs for the fifth wicket. When a tired Gurusinghe ran himself out, Sri Lanka had reached 218 for seven. India, three times winners of the tournament, were docked one over from their innings because of a slow bowling rate.
