It was ample revenge for a surpise one-run defeat to Bangladesh in the round-robin league part of the tournament on Monday. India earlier beat both its arch rival Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Bangladesh, the underdogs in the tournament, won the toss and put the Indians in to bat on a moist wicket and conditions giving an extra swing to the ball. But the hosts failed to tie down the In- dian batsmen who scored freely all round the wicket. The first 100 came in 31.3 overs and the second in 48.2 overs, with India going on to reach 216 for six wickets in 50 overs. Openers Vikram Rathore and Saurav Ganguly settled down quickly but the Indians suffered a setback when Rathore was run out try- ing to take a quick single with the score at 23. Ganguly stayed at the crease to hit a steady 39. Rahul Dravid was unlucky to be run out with his score at 37. But it was skipper Amre who stole the show, delighting the packed stadium with his stylish strokes in an unbeaten 88. Amre was adjudged man of the match by the tournament committee and man of the tournament by the local sports journalists' asso- ciation. Bangladesh were never really in the hunt, mustering 164 all out with five balls to spare. The innings began unsteadily with the wickets of four recognised batsmen falling with the score at 31. Venkatesh Prasad took four wickets for 11 runs and leg spinner Sairaj Bahutule finished with three for 26. Skipper Akram Khan with 66 and Minhajul Abedin (19) somewhat sal- vaged the home side. But their hopes expired when Khan was out stumped off the bowling of Bahutule with the score at 144 and less than five overs to go.
