Date-stamped : 05 Mar95 - 14:33 Masters Cup: India Veterans v South Africa Veterans Bombay, 5 March 1995 Indian veterans stormed into the Masters Cup semifinals on Sunday with a crushing 62-run win over their South African counterparts at the Brabourne stadium in Bombay. Powered by Krish Srikkanth`s blazing 85 and Dilip Vengsarkar`s stylish 105, the home side piled up 280 for seven from the 45-overs-a-side Group A league match. Master batsman Graeme Pollock`s 79 was not enough for South Africa, whose reply ended at 218 for six. After skipper Sunil Gavaskar was run out for a duck in the first over, Srikkanth gave India a flying start with a 101-run second- wicket stand, with Vengsarkar as passive spectator. Srikkanth sent the South Africans on a leather hunt, hammering three sixes and 13 fours in just 55 balls. It was only after the opener was bowled by a Clive Rice yorker that Vengsarkar got into the act, racing past his century with 15 fours and a six. He put on 89 runs for the fourth wicket with Yashpal Sharma (39). Rice was South Africa`s most successful bowler with three for 42 in six overs. The Indian total proved a tall order, but Pollock showed glimpses of the left-handed grace that cricket fans here missed during South Africa`s 22-year apartheid-induced sporting isolation. At 51 the oldest member of the South African team, Pollock delighted the crowd with 11 fours off 96 balls and was given a standing ovation at the end of the match. The win booked a semifinal place for India, who beat Sri Lanka in Friday`s tournament opener. South Africa meet Sri Lanka on Tuesday for a berth in the last four from Group A. West Indies, Australia and England are in Group B of the six-nation tournament. Contributed by vasa (vasanthan.dasan@central.sun.com)
