Date-stamped : 23 Aug94 - 02:28 Pak v SL, Test 2 scrapped, Two One-day Matches will be played on Monday (22 Aug) and Wednesday (24 Aug) by Sa'adi Thawfeeq The Second Cricket Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan scheduled at the SSC grounds yesterday was cancelled 15 minutes before it was due to start at 10.30 a.m. "Due to the uncertain situation prevailing in the country at the moment it was not prudent to go ahead with the Test match yester- day because it was felt that if there were problems, the curfew would be advanced and the game could be called off at any moment", said Sri Lanka Cricket Board secretary Anura Tennekoon yesterday. "In lieu of that both team managements as well as the Cricket Boards felt that it was better for us to call off the Test match and play two one-day games instead", said Tennekoon. The two one-day internationals are scheduled to take place on Monday (August 22) at the SSC grounds and on Wednesday (August 24) at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium. When questioned why the Cricket Board had to take such a late decision to cancel the test, Tennekoon replied: "Unless we were absolutely sure that we won't be able to conduct the Test, we gave it the best possible chance of really staging it. But then as it was felt that the chances were slim this decision had to be made". "If something does not bappen in the next four days in retrospect we will have to regret having to cancel the Test match. But we can take decisions only on the conditins prevailing at the time", said TEnnekoon. He said the Cricket Board explored the possibility of putting back the start of the Test match by a day, but as the teams were not willing to forego the rest day the idea had to be abandoned.
