Date-stamped : 22 Aug94 - 18:29 Sri Lanka v Pakistan, ODI4, Colombo, 21 August 1994 Pakistan beat Sri Lanka comfortably by five wickets in the fourth one-day international on Monday to take a 3-1 lead and clinch the five-match series. Put in to bat first under overcast conditions Sri Lanka struggled to a total of 174 for nine off 50 overs. Only skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, who scored his 26th one-day half- century, managed a major contribution to Sri Lanka`s score against a varied Pakistan bowling attack which dominated throughout. Going in to bat at the fall of the third wicket with only 29 on the board in the 11th over, Ranatunga saw half his team back in the pavilion for a meagre 55 off 19 overs. Ranatun- ga kept the score ticking, hitting a six and two fours but rely- ing mainly on singles and two`s to make 74 off 102 deliveries. Ranatunga`s innings ended in the 46th over when he failed to beat Mushtaq Ahmed`s direct throw to the non-strike`s end as he set out for a single. Ruwan Kalpage (24) and Pubudu Dasanayake (13) helped their captain in partnerships of 47 and 53 for the sixth and seventh wickets respectively. Wasim Akram`s two for 35 brought his total of wickets in one-day internationals level with India`s Kapil Dev on 251. Akram was playing in his 173rd match while the Indian all-rounder has played in 220. Although losing five wickets, Pakistan coasted to their winning target with more than eight overs to spare. Pakistan captain Salim Malik complet- ed his seventh half-century of the tour in eight innings, making 50 not out off 74 balls and hitting four fours. Two extra matches have been included in the one-day series following the cancellation of the second test because of a curfew ordered by the government after last week`s general election. The fifth and final match will be played on Wednesday. Contributed by vicky (vigneswa@risky.ecs.umass.edu)
