Date-stamped : 21 Sep94 - 14:33 Mashonaland v South Africa "A" Harare, 20, 21, 22, 23 September 1994 ====>Day 1, 20 Sep 94 Boje stakes a claim with four wickets Harare - Nic Boje, the 21-year-old Free State spinner, under- lined his already good prospects of a future test place for South Africa when he took four Mashonaland wickets for 65 runs yester- day. Boje winkled out Mashonaland`s two most successful batsmen, Colin Wishart (73) and Alastair Campbell (53). And with the home side`s tail collapsing, South Africa "A" can be well satisfied in facing a 271 total. In reply, the tourists were 35 without loss, Gerhardus Liebenberg and Mickey Arthur looking secure in fading light at the close. Coach Stephen Jones said: "Boje undoubtedly has promise. Now he has made sure of further progress." Play began on a bizarre note when the players noticed the pitch markings were, as one put it "squonk". There was a 23-minute de- lay as it was re-marked. Mashonaland, winning the toss, batted on a wicket described by SA manager Ray Mali as "flat and of no help at all to the seamers." The SA A attack soon broke through however, snatching the wickets of Grant Flower and Darrel Goodwin for only 29 runs. Flower relinquished the captaincy a few days ago, saying he want- ed to concentrate on his batting. Clearly it was the right deci- sion. He played across to Steven Elworthy and was bowled. Wishart, who has had a succession of failures to try the selec- tors` patience, produced some magnificent off-side drives and with the stubborn Campbell he dug Mashonaland out of trouble. The home side looked good at 217 for 5, but Boje and Dave Callaghan saw off the remainder. Thanks EP Herald. Contributed by Donald (g94p5293@giraffe.ru.ac.za)
