COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, 2-6 Jun 94
Day 1 HIGHLIGHTS
EDGBASTON: Warwicks v Durham
John Morris scored Durham's first double century in first class
cricket with a powerhouse dislpay against Warwickshire at Edgbas-
ton. The former England and Derbyshire batsman completed his
first ton for the club during a stand of 186 with Stewart Hutton.
Morris hit five sixes and 24 fours in a five and a half hour in-
nings from 282 balls to end the day on an unbeaten 204. The run
feast began after Durham had lost both their openers with only 32
runs on the board.
CHELMSFORD: Essex v Gloucs
Paul Prichard, captaining Essex in the absence of Graham Gooch,
made a superb century as he led his side to 361 against
Gloucestershire. Prichard made 119 from 174 deliveries but fi-
nally fell playing a pull shot against Mike Smith. Jonathan
Lewis made his first century of the summer for Essex in just over
five hours. Marcus Wight led Gloucestershire's fightback taking
three wickets for 76 runs.
SWANSEA: Glamorgan v Surrey
Surrey reached 250-5 before rain washed out the rest of the day's
play at Swansea. Acting captain Graham Thorpe led the way with
65. Earlier Darren Bicknell got Surrey of to a flying start with
54 but was trapped lbw by Glamorgan's Steve Watkin just before
lunch.
TUNBRIDGE WELLS: Kent v Sussex
Sussex batsman Bill Athey hit his highest score for his third
county with a quick 166 against Kent. Sussex made 305-7 off 102
overs and Athey will come back to the crease at Tunbridge Wells
just 18 short of his all time career best.
MIDDLESBROUGH: Yorks v Notts
Nottinghamshire bowler Greg Mike produced career best figures of
5-44 as Yorkshire were dismissed for 181 at Middlesbrough. Only
Simon Kellett's determined 50 from 128 balls prevented a total
collapse as Yorkshire struggled without Test debut boy Craig
White.
NORTHAMPTON: Northants v Lancs
Lancashire were also celebrating the achievements of a young
bowler as Peter Martin helped dismiss Northants for 330. The 25
year old paceman finished the day with figures of 5-61 with Al-
lan Lamb among his scalps.
TAUNTON: Somerset v Hampshire
Somerset cruised to 286-3 thanks largely to the efforts of Eng-
land under 19 batsman Marcus Trescothick against Hampshire. His
impressive 81 came at Taunton after Tony Middleton dropped him
when he had just two on the board.
LORD'S: Middlesex v Worcs
Worcestershire were steered to a total of 398-6 against Middlesex
as Tim Curtis hit a cultured 117 off 277 deliveries. His effort
helped his county to their highest score of the season so far.
