CC R6: County Championship Review (Day 2), 3 Jun 1994

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, 2-6 Jun 94

Day 2 HIGHLIGHTS

EDGBASTON: Warwicks v Durham

LARA SMASHES NEW RECORD

Brian Lara set another world record when he hit his seventh cen-
tury in his last eight first class innings. The West Indian star
reached the landmark five minutes before the close of
Warwickshire's game with Durham and finished 111 not out. Howev-
er it was his least convincing performance so far as Warwicks
made 210-2 in reply to Durham's second highest Championship score
of 556-8 Lara almost gave a return catch off his first ball and
was bowled off a no ball before he was dropped by wicket keeper
Chris Scott on 18.

LORD'S: Middlesex v Worcs

Stuart Lampitt's maiden first class century put Worcestershire in
a commanding position against champions Middlesex at Lord's. The
27 year old all rounder steered his side to a huge first innings
total of 557 before Mike Gatting's men reached 173 for two in re-
ply. Lampitt was run out for 122, his 204 ball innings took 219
minutes and included three sixes and eleven fours. The total was
the highest against Middlesex at Lord's for nine years.

NORTHAMPTON: Northants v Lancs

John Crawley's unbeaten 69 guided Lancashire to 190 for four in
reply to Northants 330 all out. England Test hopeful Crawley hit
nine fours in his 224 minute stay and added 82 for the third
wicket with opener Jason Gallian.

SWANSEA: Glamorgan v Surrey

Surrey's hopes of increasing their lead in the Championship were
hit by the weather when rain washed out the final session against
Glamorgan The Welshmen closed on 57-2 after Adam Hollioake's un-
beaten 105 and Mark Butcher's 58 had boosted Surrey's total to
429.

TUNBRIDGE WELLS: Kent v Sussex

Half centuries from Mark Benson Trevor Ward Carl Hooper and
Matthew Fleming helped Kent to 336 for 6, 17 runs ahead of
Sussex. Sussex only added 14 runs to their overnight total fol-
lowing a spell of three for four in 11 balls by Alan Igglesden.
Card on 345

CHELMSFORD: Essex v Gloucs

Gloucestershire found run gathering a far from easy task when re-
plying to an Essex total of 362. They spent most of the day try-
ing to get to grips with the accurate Essex attack and finished
on 251 for 7 from 105 painstaking overs.

MIDDLESBROUGH: Yorks v Notts

Yorkshire teenagers Michael Vaughan and Chris Silverwood played
key roles as their side moved 87 ahead of Notts at Middlesbrough.
Silverwood took 3-10 in 23 balls as Notts were bowled out for 159
before Vaughan hit a crisp 43 in Yorkshire's second innings 65-3.

TAUNTON: Somerset v Hampshire

Somerset's Richard Harden reached his first century of the season
in a rain ruined day at Taunton. Harden made 103 not out as his
side added 46 to their overnight score to close on 332-3 in the
only 12 overs possible.
