CC R6: County Championship Review (Day 4), 6 Jun 1994

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES, 2-6 Jun 94

Day 4 HIGHLIGHTS

EDGBASTON: Warwicks v Durham

Lara scores 501* (see CRICKET_NEWS). Match Drawn.

TAUNTON: Somerset v Hampshire

Somerset collected their first Championship win of the season
when they beat Hampshire by 87 runs in a contrived finish at
Taunton. Rain had washed out Saturday's play so both sides for-
feited an innings after Somerset delcared on 332-3. Hampshire
were never in the hunt as Andre van Troost, Mushtaq Ahmed and
Neil Mallender each picked up three wickets to dismiss them for
245. Only Mark Nicholas, Sean Morris and Winston Benjamin hit
form in a disappointing display.

CHELMSFORD: Essex v Gloucs

Gloucestershire came within one run of sending Essex to their
first Championship defeat of the season in a nail biting Chelms-
ford finish. Chasing 280 they finished on 279-8 after scram-
bling six of the seven runs required in the final over. However
they did collect eight points awarded to the side batting last in
a drawn match when the scores are level. Earlier they had looked
set for victory with 113 needed off 20 overs but it was not to
be.

LORD'S: Middlesex v Worcs

Desmond Haynes hit his first first class century for almost a
year but Middlesex only managed to scrape a draw with Wor-
cestershire at Lord's. The Champions were set 349 to win and
reached 208-2 but they then lost five wickets for 27 runs and
were hanging on at 304-8 at stumps.

NORTHAMPTON: Northants v Lancs

Northants pair Paul Taylor and Rob Bailey ended Lancashire's
hopes of victory as they restricted them to 215-8 as they chased
261 to win. Each man took two wickets in an over as the game was
drawn.

SWANSEA: Glamorgan v Surrey

Leaders Surrey were frustrated by the weather as rain prevented
any play in their game with Glamorgan at Swansea.

TUNBRIDGE WELLS: Kent v Sussex

Kent are still looking for their first championship win of the
season despite a sporting declaration by Sussex. Skipper Alan
Wells set a target of 221 in 25 overs but Kent finished on 152-5.
