CC R7: County Championship Review (Day 1), 9 Jun 1994
County Championship Matches : 9-13 Jun 94
Day 1 Review
DURHAM v NORTHANTS: Hartlepool
John Morris blasted a superb unbeaten 166 as Durham went on
another first day run spree against Northamptonshire. The former
Derbyshire batsman followed his magnificent 204 against Warwicks
with another momentous effort to take his side to 353 for two at
the close. Wayne Larkins weighed in with 77 while Graeme Fowler
made 60 against an attack deprived of the services of Curtly Am-
brose with a shoulder injury.
YORKSHIRE v SOMERSET: Bradford
Michael Vaughan and David Byas both rattled up three figure
scores as Yorkshire took the upper hand against Somerset at Brad-
ford. Vaughan blasted 15 fours in his 105 while acting skipper
Byas needed just 150 balls to reach his total of 102. The pair
put on 216 in 53 overs for the second wicket before Somerset
grabbed three wickets in as many balls to reduce their hosts to
303-5 at stumps.
DERBYSHIRE v LEICS: Derby
Phillip DeFreitas followed up his Trent Bridge heroics for Eng-
land with his first Championship ton since 1990 as Derby made 392
against Leics at Derby. His innings brightened up an otherwise
bleak day but did nothing to enhance the Test claims of David
Millns and Alan Mullally on a typically slow pitch. Millns cap-
tured two at a cost of 91 and Mullally failed with the ball as
Chris Adams chipped in with 94 for Derby.
SUSSEX v LANCASHIRE: Horsham
Franklyn Stephenson made flu-stricken Lancashire feel even worse
with an unbeaten 92 for Sussex at Horsham. Stephenson aided
first by Paul Jarvis in a seventh wicket stand of 107 and then by
Ian Salisbury, led the home side from 185-6 to 333-7 by the
close. Five Lancashire players Mike Atherton among them were
suffering from a 'flu bug which forced Nick Speak to leave the
field unwell during the afternoon.
KENT v MIDDLESEX: Canterbury
Stylish knocks by Kent pair Carl Hooper (89) and Trevor Ward (52)
his fifth championship half century in seven innings helped Kent
to 236-4 against Middlesex. The home side recovered after the
early loss of skipper Mark Benson for a duck in a match which saw
92 overs bowled due to rain and bad light stoppages. Hooper hit
nine fours in a fourth wicket stand of 98 with Neil Taylor (43no)
before falling to Angus Fraser.
WORCESTERSHIRE v ESSEX: New Road
Half centuries from Graeme Hick, Tom Moody and Gavin Haynes en-
abled Benson & Hedges Cup finalists Worcestershire to reach 254-6
against Essex at New Rd. Worcester chose to bat on a wicket of
variable bounce and opener Phil Weston went for a duck when he
edged Michael Kasprowicz's fifth ball to first slip. Hick (65)
and Moody (51) put on 100 in 22 overs for the third wicket before
Haynes (55) fell lbw to John Stephenson.
