NAT WEST TROPHY - ROUND 1 REVIEW, 21 Jun 94
Rain played havoc with the 16 first round ties as games up and
down the country were hit by the weather. Six were abandoned
without a ball being bowled and only two games were actually
completed.
Northumberland batsman Tim Brown was denied his debut by the
conditions and work commitments. The game with Notts was one of
those that failed to start and Brown will be unable to play if it
takes place on Wednesday because he starts a two week course in
Dover.
Edgbaston : WARWICKSHIRE v BEDFORDSHIRE
Young Beds fast bowler Matt White bowled the mighty Brian Lara
out for just 23. The 25 year old architect knocked back the
legend's off stump in his final over, but Warwickshire still went
on to total a massive 361 for eight. Openers Ostler and Twose
put on 156 to ensure Bedforshire have a mountain to climb when
they start their reply in this match extended by rain.

Bedfordshire paceman Matt White took the prized scalp of Brian
Lara for just 23 as 110 from Roger Twose saw Warwickshire to
361-8. "That is a moment I'll never forget it was absolutely
brilliant," said White.
Northampton : NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v IRELAND
Stephen Smyth held Ireland together with a battling undefeated 53
on a rain hit day at Northampton. A fierce Curtly Ambrose
conceded only a single in his opening five overs and took Rea's
wicket before Smyth joined Warke in a stand of 83. The pair
worked hard between showers before Warke was beaten by tidy
offspinner Rob Bailey. Ireland were 105 for three when bad light
stopped play.
Hove : SUSSEX v ESSEX
Graham Gooch cast aside his two recent Test failures to put
another 86 runs into his overflowing Nat-West account. Normal
service was resumed at Hove from the moment Sussex decided to
field first after a rain delayed start. Gooch started with a
flurry of fours but was caught behind trying to glide Franklyn
Stephenson to third man. Battling Sussex restricted his side
well before bad light stopped play.
====> MORE
Graham Gooch recovered from his Test match disappointment to fire
86 as Essex made 272-5 against last year's runners up Sussex.
Gooch looked set for another ton until he edged Franklyn
Stephenson to Peter Moores.
Northrop Hall : MINOR COUNTIES WALES v MIDDLESEX
Mike Gatting's Middlesex dashed Minor Counties Wales' hopes of
causing a major upset in this rain hit tie at Northop Hall.
After play got under way six hours late, the county champions
ripped through the Welsh batting to reduce them to 69 for seven
from 31 overs. Mike Newbold was the only batsman to offer any
resistance hitting five fours on his way to 24.
The Oval : SURREY v STAFFORDSHIRE
Simon Myles' gritty innings rescued Staffs from an early Joey
Benjamin onslaught against Surrey at The Oval. Myles made 71 in
a two hour stay at the crease, hitting a six and five fours as
the Minor Counties champions struggled to 165 for eight from
their 60 overs. Benjamin and Tony Pigot dominated their former
colleagues at Staffs with six wickets between them.
Finchampstead : BERKSHIRE v KENT
Carl Hooper spearheaded an assault on the record books as Kent
overwhelmed Berkshire at Finchampstead. West Indies all rounder
Hooper smashed Kent's individual record for the competition with
an unbeaten 136 full of powerful lofted straight drives. Berks'
spirited efforts were in vain after Hooper had followed Trevor
Ward past 100 to help Kent to 384 for six their highest NatWest
score ever.

Carl Hooper led an assault on the record books as Kent
overwhelmed Berkshire by 143 runs. Hooper hit Kent's individual
record score for the competition of 136 not out as they rattled
up their best ever NatWest total of 384 6. Trevor Ward hammered
120 and shared a Kent third wicket stand of 160 as they earned a
tie with Hampshire. Julian Wood made Berkshire's best indivdual
NatWest total of 88 in their highest score of 241-5 but they were
never in it.
March : CAMBRIDGESHIRE v HAMPSHIRE
Cardigan Connor and Robin Smith saw Hampshire safely over the
first hurdle with a nine wicket success againt Cambridgeshire at
March. Connor won his first one day man of the match award with
figures of four for 11 from 11 overs as the minor county were
dismissed for 107. Smith hit 69 not out from 66 balls winning
the game with a huge six off the first ball of the 32nd over.

Cardigan Connor and Robin Smith starred as Hampshire strolled
past Cambridgeshire by nine wickets in one of only two games to
finish. Connor collected the man of the match award for his
figures of 4-11 as the minor county were skittled for 107 with
extras the top score. Then Smith defied his critics to smash an
unbeaten 69 as Hampshire strolled home in the 32nd over. Three
hours were lost to rain and Hampshire now entertain Kent at
Southampton in the second round.
Exmouth : DEVON v YORKSHIRE
Former Somerset skipper Peter Roebuck hit a stylish 83 to make
Yorkshire's attack look average as Devon made 242 for five at
rain hit Exmouth. Roebuck gambled on batting first and
orchestrated an innings to stand among the competition's best
ever. But the Yorks batsmen put their side back on course by
reaching 116 for three in 28 overs before bad light finally
stopped play.
Lakenham : NORFOLK v WORCESTERSHIRE
Lightning struck twice for Graham Hick as he was extracted by
Norfolk's John "The Dentist" Maynard after scoring only six.
Maynard, who bowled Hick out for nought while playing for the
Leeward Islands against England, took the wicket with only his
third delivery. Gavin Haynes made a hard hitting 98 as Worcs put
on 309 for eight before the end of a rain hit day.
====> MORE

second time this year as Worcester made 309-8 against Norfolk.

for six but Gavin Haynes made 98 in the Worcester total.

Marcus Trescothick and Richard Harden both smashed centuries as
Somerset piled up 349-4 against Oxfordshire at Aston Rowant.
