Sunday League Matches : 29 May 94 : Review
GLOUCS v SURREY: Gloucester
David Ward kept Surrey on top of the Sunday League as the leaders
beat Gloucestershire by 10 runs Ward's 76 took 91 balls and in-
cluded a six and six fours as the visitors managed 191 for seven
before the hosts lost their first four cheaply. But Jack Russell
hit 70 in 69 balls and with Tony Wright (49) and captain Courtney
Walsh (22) the winning margin was closer than it had seemed.
WORCS v NORTHANTS: Worcester
Worcestershire maintained their unbeaten one day record despite a
spirited half century from Northamptonshire's Kevin Curran. The
B&H Cup semi finalists made 178-8 and got home by 18 runs after
restricting the visitors to 160-7. Worcestershire had also made
a slow start but picked up with 36 off 45 balls by Graeme Hick,
who later conceded only 26 runs from eight overs.
LEICS v KENT: Leicester
Kent's West Indian all rounder Carl Hooper sent Leicestershire
spinning to a 60 run defeat. Hooper snapped up four for 37 as
the home side were bowled out for 194 in 37.2 overs chasing a 255
target after Kent put on 61 in 11 overs. Kent sent openers Phil
Simmons and James Whitaker back to the pavilion with only 15 runs
on the board while Hooper destroyed the middle order.
MIDDLESEX v WARWICKS: Lord's
Warwickshire survived the loss of Brian Lara to a first ball duck
to move second in the League after a three wicket win over lowly
Middlesex. Lara's exit left the visitors at 15-2 after Desmond
Haynes (31) had pushed the hosts to 155-7. Two fine catches on
the Grandstand boundary by Haynes to remove Asif Din and Smith
kept Middlesex in with a chance, but it was not enough.
LANCS v SOMERSET: Old Trafford
John Crawley had plenty to celebrate despite being left out of
the England squad with a fine 60 as the hosts cruised to a for-
midable 207-9 Graham Rose gave Somerset some hope by hammering 68
in 49 balls to take the visitors to 152-2. Somerset then subsid-
ed despite an unbeaten 23 from captain Andy Hayhurst after Rose
was run out by Lancs' Graham Lloyd when slipping out of his
crease.
DERBYS v NOTTS: Ilkestone
An innings of controlled violence by Paul Johnson launched Not-
tinghamshire towards a comprehensive seven wicket victory over
local rivals Derbyshire Johnson's 90, made out of 115 while he
was at the wicket came from only 64 balls with three sixes and 10
fours. Derbyshire's total of 227-7 was built around half centu-
ries from Peter Bowler and Mohammad Azharuddin before Johnson's
blast for victory.
SUSSEX v GLAMORGAN: Hove
Sussex clinched their second Sunday League victory of the season
with a seven wicket victory over Glamorgan. Sussex reached their
reduced target of 115, caused by two rain stoppages, with 5.2
overs to spare with David Smith and Keith Greenfield dominant.
Glamorgan failed to capitalise on a solid start of 37 in 13 overs
by Stephen James and skipper Hugh Morris with Eddie Hemmings tak-
ing 3-23.
