Date-stamped : 03 Jun94 - 18:24 MIDDLESEX v CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY played at Fenners, 30Apr-2May 94 ====> Day 3, 2 May 94 A hard-hit 90 by John Carroll narrowly failed to save Cambridge University from defeat by Middlesex, who won by 78 runs with five overs to spare at Fenner's yesterday. Carroll, who totalled only 69 runs in 12 innings for the University last season, was last out, caught on the mid-wicket boundary. Having been set 300 in five hours, after Middlesex had declared with Emburey 78 not out, the university were stumbling towards a heavy defeat before Car- roll, a 21-year-old undergraduate, launched his in- nings. He shared a partnership of 65 with Chris Pitcher for the seventh wicket but then began to run out of partners as Em- burey picked up four wickets. Carroll shunned safety-first tac- tics and was fi- nally caught off Paul Weekes, having hit 12 fours in a 199-minute innings. The total of 221 was Cambridge's best of the season.
