Date-stamped : 05 Oct95 - 10:27 WI squad to Sharjah. Selectors have raised more questions than answers in announcing the West Indies squad for a two-week tour of the United Arab Emirates. Only nine players from the 17-strong squad that fin- ished the summer tour to England survive for the Sharjah Cham- pions Trophy from October 11-20. Only one player completely new to international cricket is named -- off-spinning all-rounder Nehemiah Perry of Jamaica, whose improved batting has stengthened his case. Following Friday`s announcement of the 14-member squad, West In- dies Cricket Board of Control (WICBC) chairman of selectors David Holford said: "This is the best team we could choose in the cir- cumstances." The former Barbados and West indies leg-spinning allrounder added: "I would really love to answer questions, but I am afraid I cannot. It will be made clearer later." Two players ignored for the England tour have returned -- opening batsman Phil Simmons and fast bowlers Andy Cummins. Roger Harper, whose last international was against England at Queen`s Park Oval last year, and Hamesh Anthony, discarded after the World Series Cup in Austalia nearly four years ago, also win recalls. But the chief talking point will be the omission of Carl Hooper, who has so often contributed decisively in one-day internation- als. He has career statistics of 3,017 runs in 133 matches at an average of 33.15 runs but his recent record of 894 runs in his last 18 matches at an average of 59.60 underline is more reveal- ing. Keith Arthurton, Junior Murray, Kenneth Benjamin, Vasbert Drakes and Rajindra Dhanraj are the other outcasts from the team captain by Richie Richardson. Their absence may only be tem- porary with the World Series Cup in Australia in prospect later this year, followed by the World Cup in Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka next year. Fast bowlers Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh were not con- sidered for selection for the tour to the United Arab Emirate. They "accepted the WICBC`s offer to rest from the tour," accord- ing to a WICBC statementl. Left-handed Jamaican batsman Jimmy adams has been included in the squad but must undergo a fitness test on a cheekbone fractured in England last month and on a troublesome knee which underwent surgery on Monday. In the Unit- ed Arab Emirates, West Indies play four one-day internationals -- five if they reach the final -- in a triangular series involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Squad: Richie Richardson (captain), Jimmy Adams, Hamesh Anthony, Ian Bishop, Courtney Browne, Sherwin Campbell, Shivnarine Chan- derpaul, Andy Cummins, Ottis Gibson, Roger Harper, Brian Lara, Nehemiah Perry, Phil Simmons, Stuart Williams.
